Wix vs. Squarespace vs. WordPress: Which Website Builder Is Best for Cleaning Companies?

By all accounts, building a website should be easier than scrubbing baseboards. I mean, you’re not on your knees with a Magic Eraser. You’re just dragging boxes on a screen. How hard can it be?

Turns out, kind of hard.

Full disclosure: At Five Door Media (which I own with my husband and business partner, Drew), we build websites on Squarespace. We love it. But this is not a sales pitch. Cleaning companies often ask us: “Which is the best website builder for my business?” Let’s break it down — Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress — the three most common platforms.

Wix: The Tinkerer’s Playground

  • Price: $16-$27/month for business plans.

  • Ease of Use: Drag-and-drop, very beginner-friendly.

  • Best For: Small residential cleaning companies that want something quick and decent-looking without learning code.

Wix feels a little like going into a craft store. There are endless templates, add-ons, and widgets. Want an online booking tool? Wix has it. Need a gallery of before-and-after photos? Easy.

The flip side: all those choices can get overwhelming. You might spend more time perfecting button placement than booking jobs. Also, Wix sites don’t always scale well if you grow bigger: think moving from five houses a week to full commercial contracts.

Squarespace: The Sleek Minimalist

  • Price: $23-$36/month for business/commerce.

  • Ease of Use: Very easy, clean templates, drag-and-drop but more structured.

  • Best For: Cleaning companies that want a polished, professional look without the fuss.

Squarespace is known for simple, modern designs that look good on mobile (which matters since most people will find your cleaning business on their phone). It integrates with scheduling apps, takes payments online, and is easier to maintain than WordPress.

The downside? It’s not as customizable as Wix or WordPress. If you want a super-unique design or advanced features (like custom client portals), Squarespace may feel a little limiting.

WordPress: The Powerhouse

  • Price: Free software, but hosting costs $10-$25/month. Premium themes and plugins can add $100+ per year.

  • Ease of Use: Steeper learning curve. Requires setup and occasional troubleshooting.

  • Best For: Larger or fast-growing cleaning companies, or anyone planning multiple locations.

WordPress is the king of customization. Need SEO tools to rank in Google searches like “office cleaning near me”? It has plugins for that. Want a booking system, staff scheduling, client portals, payment integration, blog, and anything else you can think of? WordPress can do it.

The tradeoff: It’s not plug-and-play. If you don’t want to mess with updates, plugins, and troubleshooting, you’ll likely need to pay someone to build and maintain it.

So, which should you choose?

  • If you’re just starting out and want something fast and simple: Wix.

  • If you want a clean, professional site that looks great without stress: Squarespace.

  • If you’re planning to grow big, scale, or want maximum control: WordPress.

Bottom line: all three platforms can work for a cleaning company, depending on your goals. The “best” one is the one that gets you clients and helps you run your business without pulling your hair out.

And unlike scrubbing tile grout, you don’t need bleach for this job.
